Monthly Archives: January 2012

I’ve been working on getting my Etsy store up and running, making and tinkering with some new pieces, Rohebo the cat always helping me out of course, I bought some new little 3″ tropicals for the desk eggs, tried a rich dark Belgian Black beer, made fish tacos with fresh mango salsa, homemade pickled onions and Ryan’s homemade guacamole with Ryan and sis Michelle, and more Etsy work STILL in progress!

I hit the Zara sale and picked up 2 pairs of fun new shoes!  I’ve never actually owned anything animal print, and I’ve been eyeing leopard shoes for a while now, so I was super happy they had a pair of leopard booties on sale for 50% off!  I missed nabbing these silver patent bluchers last fall, but they had brought a few pairs back to the Robson street store, and I finally got them for 50% off!  Can’t wait to wear my new shoes!

The Mast Brothers from The Scout on Vimeo.

We made a quick stop into Old Faithful in Gastown and picked up some of the BEST chocolate I’ve ever had – Mast Brothers Chocolate!  We chose the “Brooklyn Blend”, “Almond & Sea Salt“, and the “Vanilla & Smoke” bar!  Each bar has a distinct flavour, a rich quality cocoa flavour, each infused with special notes: the Vanilla & Smoke bar is stunning – the ingredients are described as “smoked cacao and bourbon vanilla bean” – and I definitely wouldn’t argue with that!  I didn’t expect to get much of a smoky flavour from the chocolate, maybe just a slightly smoky aftertaste, but from the first whiff and then bite, a rich, smoky flavour sets in and REALLY compliments the subtle sweetness of the vanilla and chocolate!  It’s almost as though you’re eating the best chocolate bar you’ve ever tasted while sitting in front of a warm campfire, lightly inhaling the smoke and letting it meld (and melt) in your mouth!

Next visit – Black Truffle!

(All images from unless otherwise noted.)  Omgee – Givenchy.  So Givenchy takes my award for best Spring Couture 2012 collection, hands down!  Bouchra Jarrar is by far my favourite newcomer and more wearable, but this Givenchy collection is the definition of stunning from head-to-toe!  Ok let me start with the collection shot, staged as Givenchy’s basketball team for the 2012 spring season?!  Way to seal the deal for me if I wasn’t already obsessed with this collection!  Nice uniforms! Ours never looked THAT amazing!  I dug through my old files to find one of my old team shots as a comparison…(Only shot I could find of my high school team. Can you see me?)  Definitely would choose the Givenchy uniforms, though ours were more appropriate for movement… but who would care if we looked that spiff?!  Below I chose a few of my favourites, the decorated reptile skin leather and flawless drapery and beading at the small of the back?!  And the accessories are perfect – jewelled nose-rings and oversized chandelier drop earrings dripping with diamonds?!  Such a gorgeous, edgy and romantic visual!(Givenchy detail shots sources: image1, image2.)  Ok no collection can beat that Givenchy collection for me, but the shows must go on, so next, my picks from Chanel!  I love the cut and structure of the royal blue dress,  such a perfect dress for work or for dinner out on the town!  Chanel kept it edgy and modern with the punky hair styling and makeup, but its classicism shines on with gorgeously feminine dresses and luxurious detail and embellishment! Finally, Armani Privé!  I’m actually NEVER a fan of Armani, to me its usually geared towards a much older customer, it’s far too simple and quite frankly, too dull for my taste, but this couture collection MIGHT start turning me to an Armani fan?  I’m pleasantly surprised by the fun flouncy oversized skirts, the subtle shimmer of the material, the surprisingly youthful feel of the collection, and the interesting cuts of the dresses pictured below… hmmm… I’m looking forward to seeing his next collection…

All images from Ooooh couture week!  Decadence and extravagance and luxury and impeccable tailoring cranked up a notch!  Let’s dive right in to my favourite surprise of the bunch!  I’ve never heard of the designer Bouchra Jarrar and I was delighted to see such a fresh, modern yet luxurious and classy collection with the fur collar and trim, bright pops of coloured leather and knits and the beautiful palette of rich tweedy/wooly fabrics!  So beautiful, I can’t wait to see more from Bouchra Jarrar:Mmmm Dior!  This collection makes me think of film noir/murder mystery – a fabulous and mysterious femme fatale who dresses quite impeccably, I’m loving the plaid and lace ballgown!Though I wasn’t a huge fan of Giambattista Valli’s SS2012 collection, I thought this couture collection was everything that I love about the designer – frothy, feminine, but still edgy and powerful!  I’m loving the gathered shoulders and volume on the gowns!  My absolute favourite would have to be the first dress – the light dotted white fabric cocktail dress with the gathered shoulder – sigh:More to come!

1. mint earrings from violette veldor in victoria, 2. scarf from aritzia, 3. elizabeth and james black silk tank, 4. mike & chris maguire studded leather jacket, 5. purple sweater from aritzia, 6. cheap monday mustard jeans.

So, when Ryan tries to take my picture, I make a super goofy face and I look ridiculous – and me trying not to make a goofy face looks even creepier!  I’m going to have to either practice having my picture taken or hire Jamie Delaine for every outfit post… hmmmm I know what I would prefer hehehe 😉

This is a typical casual outfit I like to wear in the Fall, I love wearing layers, mixing colours, and I LOVE my scarves!  These mustard coloured Cheap Monday jeans have been a staple for me the past 6 months, they go with everything and add a bit of interest to even the most plain of my outfits (such as this one)!

Along with the seasonal beer and Fall/Winter seasonal coffees, being able to pile on the layers of colour and texture in what I wear makes me love the colder seasons! (Except for downright freezing weather where you pretty much are in a large marshmallow with only your eyes showing!)  The bouquet I included is one of my favourite combos – peonies and kale!

Ryan, Michelle and I finally got a chance to try the Bitter Tasting Room, located in Gastown at Carrall and Hastings!  Bitter is owned and operated by the same group that runs the Salt Tasting Room, one of our favourite spots, and I would definitely recommend making a reservation if you’d like to get in!  We lucked out in getting a few seats at the bar, but the foyer was full of waiting customers waiting to sample Bitter’s huge beer fridge all night!

Bitter had 2 beer flights on special – a flight from New York featuring Brooklyn Brewery‘s “Local 2” Belgian style beer, He’Brew‘s “Messiah” Nut Brown (my favourite of the group) and Ommegang‘s “Hennepin” Saison beer.  The second flight was a mix of local creamy and dark ales – meant to taste a little bit like a dessert 🙂  Our favourite beer of the night was the single bottle of “Big Smoke Ale” we shared – it’s a collaborative beer made by Storm and Russell Brewing Companies – smoky and dark, rich and peaty, and definitely easy to drink!

We snacked on a few appetizers while sampling our flights – we tried the pork rillette (creamy pork spread over crunchy baguette slices) and crispy salty pork scratchings – both of which were great with the beer, but next time I’m dying to try a few of their farm eggs (maybe a deviled and a scotch egg) and their handmade sausages!  My favourite dish of the night was their Citrus dessert – omg – creamy lemon custard with honey and pistachios – amazing amazing!

We had a great time at Bitter, the food and atmosphere were everything we’d hoped for from a Gastown dining out experience, and the extensive beer fridge will definitely have us coming back for more!
